And This is Why I Try to be Selective...

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 25, 2008, 9:29 PM
I'm feeling rather down about deviantART, lately. At least since my most recent deviation - three weeks ago - has yet received no commentary whatsoever. That's the sort of thing that disappoints me. I know, I have no real advertising going for me. Simply word of mouth, or click of mouse leads people to my showcase of supposed art. But at the same time, I wish I could get some feedback from the few people who are "watching" me. The majority of my submissions have gone unnoticed by their watch, really.

So what have I been doing in order to ensure that I would get more feedback? Be more selective in my submissions, of course. If I throw out a lot of garbage, I might get noticed, but that's certainly not the kind of exposure I want. Setting up a name for myself, where I am simply mediocre at best, is not what I have in mind. So I've been trying to submit only those works that I thought were really something, or at least better than I've done in the past, and on top of that, I've tried to weed out some of the older submissions that really aren't all that great.

So, after all this, the fact that I'm still getting almost no feedback is not only startling and disturbing, but considerably disheartening. Am I really any good at this photography thing? How am I to know, if no one gives me the word? I rely on others' opinions to form a basis for my conclusions. That's how it works - or how it's supposed to work. Right now, I'm teetering on the edge of photographic depression, if that is a legitimate claim.

I'll try to put up some new photography in my gallery, but if I still lack feedback in every way that I do right now, then from now on, it's going to be all for myself, not for you, the "watchers".

I wonder... will anything come of this?

That's alright. I'm flattered that you wanted to use my image.

One thing I might point out, in critique: the spelling is "perform" not "preform". Otherwise, it's pretty cool.

Actually, I'm planning on setting up a way for people to download my songs, on myspace, for a dollar, each. I've been a bit busy with work and writing and other things these past few weeks, but hopefully by this weekend I'll have an effective means to distribute my music to friends and fans. ;)

I am so sorry I did not actually ask to use the picture, but if you like I can take it down. I usually ask but I misread your offline thing as 'months' not 'minutes' and i was going to drop you a note, too, but I blanked on that too.

Hiya Thomas!

Well.. I'm kinda new to DeviantART and all.. Alas I added you on myspace as well. :) Your work is very beautiful, hope we can be friends and talk more.

<3 Danielle

P.S. Is there a way you can send me your music so I can put it on my iPod? Your music is very soothing, I'd like to take it with me. ^_^

yes i love using the tripod! but who wants to carry that around?!
hhahaha no but really.

i'm just going to save up money and get a better camera.
~BarahirofLadros:iconBarahirofLadros: May 19, 2008, 10:03:54 PM
Larger than 12 or 15 inches? Because 5.1 megapixels should honestly be fine for almost any non-commercial print. Also, you sited megapixels as a factor contributing to lower picture quality, so I was just trying to clarify that if you have more than 4 or 5 megapixels, overall picture quality shouldn't be an issue.

I agree about auto focus. It's useful, often, but it's also very very good to be able to focus on whatever you want, not just what seems to be the most 'important' object to the camera.

Anyway, if quality is still an issue, try using a tripod. Especially in low light settings.

i do agree, that you need a camera with professional features. but more megapixels are good for me, because i do print out a lot of my photos, pretty big. and i would looove to get a camera with a manual focus, i hate auto focus. and yes, photoshop does help a lot, i'm in a class where we use it, but i dont have it at home, and i always get so used to using it at school, so when i get home i can't edit my pictures with it. It just makes everything so much harder.

Above, deviantart put in an emoticon for me... weird. I just had the word professional in quotation marks, but it became a wink/razz smiley. Bleh.

Well the number of megapixels only helps you make larger prints. Like I said, I have an older model Olympus digital SLR, with just 4 megapixels, but I can print 8x10s, or maybe even larger, and I think that I am not wrong in saying that the quality of much of my work is comparable with ';professional' work. My Olympus is eight years old, but it's the amount of real control I have over the final product that gives me a reason to hold on to it. What you need is a camera with professional features, which will give you control over every aspect of what the camera is doing. If you can do it manually, and understand what you're doing when you open up the aperture or change the ISO, you can quite often do better than automatic settings the camera would have otherwise used. And that's before you even get into different removable lenses and filters and external flash units.

Also, having recent version of Adobe Photoshop helps immensely in high quality photo production. I know it's expensive, but one way to save money on it is to buy an outdated version of Photoshop on ebay, and then go to Adobe's website and pay to upgrade it to the latest version, using the old version's serial number and registration info. It costs significantly less to upgrade than to buy it flat out. Or you can try to pirate it, but that's kind of... not nice.

yes i know what you mean. I got my camera maybe over a year and a half ago, and i already want a new one. cameras just keep getting better. and i only have 5.1 megapixels. so the quality of my pictures also don't come out very well.
~BarahirofLadros:iconBarahirofLadros: May 11, 2008, 11:16:38 AM
Yeah, I'm saving for a Nikon D70, myself. I'd just like to be able to 1.) work with higher resolution files, so that I can make larger prints without compromising quality, and 2.) have a camera that is actually going to be able to process pictures quickly. You see, I actually really like the camera I have. It's an Olympus E-10 Camedia. It has all the professional features I would look for in a camera, at a bare minimum, at least. And it also has a pretty quiet shutter. It's just older, so at 4 megapixels, I can't print much more than 8x10s, and it's also quite slow, so I have to wait a good 6-8 seconds between shots, often, which could mean a missed opportunity.

I have enjoyed it, thank you so much. I feel like I didn't use it to its full potential, as I didn't create any cool journal entries or do anything extra special, but I think it's the little things that I'll miss, and I may actually end up buying a subscription, this summer.

I'm at Berklee College of Music, in Boston. Haven't decided on a major yet, but I have been considering either Music Production & Engineering or Songwriting.

Studying abroad sounds fun. :)

Where do you go to school? I recently transferred from East Carolina University (a big southern school with lots of partying) to Meredith College, and all-girls school in downtown Raleigh. I'm loving it. Looking to major in Art Education; and I am studying abroad in Spain this summer :)
